Cheap Muthafuggahs – a “feel good” piece!

So, once again, where some see rainbows, I notice the pot of poop at the end.

I know, I know….the cup is half full…if you consider a dose from an eye dropper in a 24 ounce slurpee cup – a half.

After Super biatch Sandy, HBO put on the 12-12-12 concert. It was one of the greatest collection of musicians ever on a venue.

This concert was viewed by 19 million in the U.S. alone, according to Nielson. (I often wonder how they count.)

But when all was said and done in this feel good attempt to raise money for our fellow Americans DEVASTATED by Sandy…

a reported 50 million dollars was raised.

Lets do the math. First of all, anyone who can afford HBO, certainly can afford to kick in a buck. Cheap muthafuggahs #1.

Cheap muthafuggahs #2….It would have been nice if HBO had said, your donation from 1 to 20 dollars will be deducted from your next bill. (Merely a suggestion for the cheap muthafuggahs.)

Time Warner is not hurting at all when it comes to earnings.

And superstars such as Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney…were all paid by corporations. I am not sure how much – but it would have been nice if those rich muthafuggahs did it for cost of their crew. (Maybe they did….) But some of those rich muthafuggahs could easily write out a check for a million dollars without blinking a muthafuggahn eye.  But I fear the rich muthafuggas are cheap muthafuggas #3.

30 Million was raised by ticket sales, bought mostly by rich muthafuggas and corporations.

That income did not count the extra that stubhub and scalpers snagged for themselves.

Stubhub charges a 25 percent fee, the total cost of the tickets sold on the resale site was estimated to be about $4 million. The tickets were listed for many times their face value, prompting some calls in Albany for a ban on reselling tickets to charitable events. So those cheap muthafuggahs – #5, grossed 1 million. 2% of the total income of the damn event.)

Whip out the calculators again. So 50 million raised – 30 million in ticket sales = 20 million.

The concert was also broadcast in several theaters and concert halls for FREE. I wonder if any of those cheap muthafuggahs attending kicked in a dollar?

So maybe each viewer from HBO did kick in a dollar to raise the 20 million….or a few rich muthafuggahs kicked in a lot, and the middle class muthafuggahs (which barely exist anymore) didn’t kick in anything. And the poor muthafuggahs can’t afford HBO, so they get a pass.

Okay – you get it. I was discouraged at how little this huge effort brought in. When all is said and done, the huge rich cheap muthafuggah corporations could have just taken care of the entire disaster…and taken it as a tax deduction. Then the rest of the poor muthafuggahs would have to pay with their taxes. And the poor muthafuggahs will pay anyway, as the corporations still got to write off and capitalize on sponsoring the concert to pay the rich muthafuggahs to sing a few songs.

Now for the feel good part.

Local people here in Jersey…example, a woman named Diane Henderiks, who is a chef, went out and fed a bunch of workers – firemen – volunteers. She used her own money to buy the food, spent the time to cook it, and served it to the hard working muthafuggahs. No tax deduction…no billboard. She did it because she wanted to help.

Another guy…her husband, actually, a chiropractor, straightened out volunteer workers’ backs after they worked their muthafuggin balls off.

FEEL GOOD PIECE – part 2.

So, as you know, I wrote a song in tribute of the memory of Martin Richard – and his family – and all affected by the Boston Marathon Tragedy. I have a goal to give a portrait of Martin to his family. And the other goal of a statue…well, we’ll see.

Every musician played for free. They used their own gas to get there. Every studio gave me the studio for free. Everyone who helped video, did it for free.

I don’t count my first drive from New Jersey to Boston as an expense, as I was going anyway. That visit to the Boston Strong Memorial helped to inspire the song, (along with the photo of Martin holding his sign).  But I drove up to New Hampshire to record the first session and enjoyed every mile…and every minute.

Now, my second trip from New Jersey to Boston was exclusively for the recording. I had just driven 600 miles – after my tour date I turned around, and drove another 600 round trip. The engineer worked for a week, for free. I fed him. It was the least I could do. (A college student.) And a good friend let me crash at his house.

So the whole thing – video and recording – didn’t cost that much, just a few hundred bucks for me – and a few hundred hours of my time…which is free…and was a pleasure!  In fact, all involved did it with pleasure…and love.

My muthafuggin back was killing me from driving – so that same chiropractor, Erick Henderiks, cracked me for free, too! He was a literal pay back!

The song and video came out mid week. In three days it has been watched by 1,133 people.

Guess how many have actually downloaded the song?

I’m all for transparency:

So 27 people out of 1,133 views….2%.  And I’ll have to pay taxes on the income. It takes a lot of effort trying to do something nice.
Some people have shared the song and link on facebook….and encouraging others to download…but they didn’t themselves!  I dunno, a buck-29 doesn’t seem to be too much, even for poor muthafuggahs.
I guess I’m just a little discouraged. The painting has already started.  The artist will do it no matter what. He wants to. And in fact, today he says he wants to do it for nothing.
I want to thank the 27 generous muthafuggahs for downloading the song.
Here’s the video
Please share and download if it moves you.
My concept? Art Helps Heal – Ahh.
Thank you to all of the generous muthafuggahs! YOU ROCK!

That pissed me off, as we were going to do more when July pay hits. I would suggest a trust from a bank, a non profit group to donate just to what you want done. It seems like the only way. I bought the song for ten dollars, and cannot even get it loaded. Scott helped me last time. You put your heart and soul into it. To me it is one of your best. I hope someone will step up and sell the song, and donate to a trust fund Aloha smile. You did a great thing
The money hungry people. What goes around, comes around to bite you in the A&&

    Hi,
I was at that show. I was told by someone in the industry there that no one took a fee, only monies paid were for crew, union guys and catering. I would be very disappointed if that was not the case. PS- I just was told recently that a local band I know charged a fee to play at a benefit here for some sick kids. I just don’t understand that! And they are not some name band that will draw a ton of people and donations. I think when its a ” benefit”, its implied you donate your time. I do always at those shows. PSS-I paid $500 for my tickets and was glad to for 12/12/12. I know a lot of people were there for free, as their companies, like Citibank, took them. Such is life in NYC. I was happy to see a great show and donate. PSSS-I organized a benefit for Boston in Asbury and paid money out of my pocket to advertise. A lot of people who told me they were coming did not. So I feel your pain. Such is life in the little city. PSSSS- I just bought your song. It’s very pretty, sad and very well sung. Good luck in all your future things. Dave

Martin is a wonderful song and a marvelous video. I was sorry I couldn’t offer more but appreciate very much the opportunity to help. We are organized as a society to function for the most part on a 90/10 split…only 10 out of every hundred work to make a difference and are fortunate they don’t get stifled/stoned by the 90 of 100 who are there to gawk and vogue. You are the difference and your effort allowed to help make a difference-two different concepts but at the end of the day some part of the world in which we live was improved. Thanks!
