“I find this all fascinating. And here’s what I think, for what it’s worth: I’ve listened to most of her nominated album, “Emotional Jukebox.” It isn’t very good, in my opinion, and it is definitely not Americana, though that’s a hard word to define. At best, her songs remind me of mid-70s Loggins and Messina. At worst, I get some Shania Twain. I suspect there are a lot more than ten albums that are better than this one.”

(And btw, I have no problem with anyone having their opinion about my music.  I find both comparisons flattering. This person had the class to preface that it was an opinion. What I do have a problem with is when someone insults my fans.)

Now back to the party…Grammy Nominees get 2 free tickets to attend, and everyone else has to pay $200 dollars to get in.  (That is in addition to the money you have to pay for your tickets to the Grammy show, that can range from $300 for nose bleeds, to $1000 dollars.)  Or you can go on line and get ripped off and pay up to $5,000 dollars for a fancy ticket that a record label has made available to scalp at 5x the cost!  If you are a Grammy Member, you can get the nose bleeds for $150.

You cannot go to the party unless you purchase the tickets to the show.  So, at the very least, it will cost a member $350 dollars to go to both.  But it was a great show, and a hell of a party.  For the Rock Doc, it was 2 Grand.

For me, it was complimentary, but we had to shell out for hotels, make-up and hair, transport “Goin’ to California”  (Which you can download!!), and other stuff.  So, there is a couple of G’s right there, too.  (If “Going to California” gets 3,000 downloads, I might break even!)

So 2 things…

Congrats!!  Great Opera piece that actually uses the word “fart” in it!  So, I had to vote for him….

Anyway, he won.  He brought his 9 year old daughter with him, all the way from New York.

There are several check-point Charlie’s before attending any of the events.

So, Herschel and his daughter were at one of the check-points, to the after party, and found that someone had swiped his tickets from his tuxedo pocket!

He explained to the security, and then, even to higher authorities, that he was a Grammy Winner, (and there was evidence), not the actual trophy, (you get that in the mail, a couple of months later…I may be camping out in front of his door to swipe it!)

But, regardless, they would NOT let him in!!  No ticky no shirty!  With his 9 year old daughter!!!  WTF!!???

Anyway, I am sorry Herschel.  That totally sucks.  (However, I would rather have had the win, and not have attended the party!)

Thing 2 – Looks like I am going to have to go on the road asap.  I love performing, though!

But the bottom line?  I had articles written about me all over the world.  Tons of press.  But I make more sales in one show live on my CD‘s, then I do with downloads on line, on the week of the Grammys!  WTF?

So I’m a little depressed this morning, on the first morning I have been able to relax in my own bed in a while.  But the relaxing will not last.  Gonna hop in my Indie mobile, (Ford F1-50) and gonna hit the road to do some shows.  Probably going out solo until I can afford a band.

I am discouraged about how infrequently music is bought these days.  Not just from me, but other Indies without the giant muscle behind them.  And mainly, it is because people can steal your music.  Why pay?  Or stream it for .017 cents.  (or whatever ridiculous fraction of a penny an artist gets.)  WTF???!!!  (Do the math on how many times someone would have to listen to my song to make a dollar!)

And I wonder how many more albums my fellow nominees even sold after the nomination?  Of course, in a blog, recently written to diss me and my fans, Bob Lefsetz mentioned how my record sales did not “spike”.  But, he neglected to provide info of the others’ in my category.  And they are tremendous musicians, with great albums, so my point is not one of disrespect, just curiosity.

If I may take the line from one of my favorite movies, “Stripes”, written by Harold Ramis,

(Okay, the movie is a bit of a fantasy.  But so was being nominated for a Grammy!)

When the book comes out, (which will hopefully become the movie), you will know all of the shit I have had to put up with.  What I thought would have been just a feel good story, went from elation, to shock, to frustration, to graduation, and back to elation!

And the bottom line is….I can only be me.  I can only be honest.  I cannot play the game.  I will never be fake.  I will always tell the truth.  If I think someone is out of line, I’m going to express it.  I am not going to kiss ass to get ahead.  The phrase, “You can catch more bees with honey?”  Yeah, that’s true.  It is an art.  But sometimes that can be interpreted as “You can manipulate more people with bullshit.”  (Which may explain why I have not had the big success in my music career.)

And I’m one of those people that sticks up for someone being wronged.  (Including myself.)  Like, ya know on Oprah, when they put a hidden camera in place, and they stage a couple, where someone is being victimized, and no one wants to get involved, except for that one person?

That is me.  At the risk of getting physically hurt, or involved.  That is me.  When I see a pregnant woman smoking?  I say something.  When I see a guy yelling at a woman, and pushing her around?  I step in.  When I see a kid getting beaten in Turkey?  I step in.  (But there is never a camera around for me to get a free car!)

But maybe there will be a camera around to capture what I have experienced.  And I guarantee it will not be boring or predictable.

And I am sure I will make some enemies of a system that is broken.  Of a corruption that is just accepted in the music business.  And in parts of society.   I mean, just look at my song “AWOL” on “Emotional Jukebox”.  I am sticking up for men that did not want to go to war during the draft.  Not a popular stance.  An “Unpatriotic” stance.  But it is my stance.  Hence part of my motivation for my record label.  ”Dance More Less War” records.

And the bottom line?  The artist is usually at the bottom of the food chain.  There is the exception of the .01 percent of the artists that are lucky enough to reap the benifits of the business.  And by no means am I suggesting they do not deserve the accolades and the doe.

But many of the players on the chessboard of the music business are profiting, and most musicians are just sacrificial pawns.   I will not be one of them.

On a lighter note…I have a show Friday!  I am playing in Carbondale at Steve’s Guitar Shop.  And in the morning I am on Breakthru Radio with Jezz Harkins, and this afternoon on KDNK with Alan the Dream Weaver.

Oh yeah!  I am on the Americana Charts!  Thanks to all of the folks spinning my record, and to Fred Boenig (played by Tom Hanks), for making it happen.  More champagne!!!

Today my friend Bobby Messano wrote me a note, steaming!  He was so mad!!!  He said, “Did you see what that fuckstick Lefsetz wrote?!!!

I said, no.  Then asked, batting my eye lashes…was it about me?  (I thought for sure it was not.)  Messano texts me back.  Yes.

Yes?  Really?  So he sent me the link.  I used to subscribe to Lefsy, but thought he was too much of a grumpy old man, and a bit of a douche, and hit the unsubscribe button.  Then it automatically asked, “Why do you want to stop subscribing?”  (Something like that).  And I wrote, “Cuz he is a dick.”

But now I have had a change of heart.  I mean, just look at him.  How can you not be in love with this man?

Such passion and charisma.  He is a rock star!  And not only that, he is a lawyer!  How sexy is that?  And you know all lawyers are experts in music, and have the best ears!

I was excited when Bobby told me he wrote about me.  I knew it was going to be ugly, but I didn’t care!  I am actually flattered that he began his last blog with this:

"Linda Chorney didn't win the Grammy. You remember Ms. Chorney, she's the woman who used the Grammy 360 program to get herself a nomination. 
That was remarkable. Unfortunately, Ms. Chorney's music was not. Despite the worldwide press, there was no spike in sales, no embrace by the public, she's still a marginal artist playing to marginal audiences. 
Because her music is not remarkable. You have to be remarkable. 
Not good, not better than the people on the radio, but remarkable, which Seth Godin defines as being worthy of being talked about. There was nothing to talk about in Ms. Chorney's music.

You can't beat them, and you don't want to be them. He probably doesn’t even know the name of my album, or who played on it.  And he has the balls to say  ”She was selling average stuff to average people!??”  What the fuck does that mean?

You really do have to laugh at that.   And he doesn’t even know what Grammy 365 is.

I don’t mind that he doesn’t find my music remarkable.  He is entitled to his opinion.  But this average stuff to average people is so ridiculous.  He is so superior.

Doesn’t this guy have better things to do than to see how many records I have sold on “SoundScan“?  Which I just signed up for?  I never had to answer to anyone.  And I still don’t.  And it’s awesome!

But I am proud to say that I have graduated.  You remember my blog from the day of the Grammys when I admitted that I was hurt by what some folks said?  The bullies I didn’t expect in the beginning?  Well, I swear to you, I don’t anymore!  I am totally at peace!  There is such a satisfaction in me, since Sunday, that I cannot describe.  I can only say that I am immensely content!  And I can’t wait to get back into the studio and get my next album done!

Maybe I will write a love song for Lefestz.  Maybe not.  But regardless, I am so pleased with “Emotional Jukebox” and so grateful for the talented world class musicians that came on board!

P.S.  As I mentioned in one of my last blogs, about Whitney Houston, and the media and critics having a part in her anguish,  (And my husband brought this up at the dinner table tonight),  ”That asshole Lefsetz doesn’t know a thing about you!  What if you were unstable?  What if his words actually pushed you over the edge?”  (Don’t worry, not a chance, my average people!)

My point?  Some critics are just mean, and probably haven’t had a Valentines Day Blow Job in a long time.   (I actually have a better word for Lefsetz, but have only allowed myself to use it once a year in my blog, and I already used it on Michele Bachmann.)

Thank God it’s over!!!!  The anxiety of not knowing was one of the hardest things I have ever had to go through.

a) I hate waiting

b) I can’t stand not having control over a situation, or being left in the dark.  Too much time to speculate.

Did I think I stood a shot?  Yeah, a little.

But it sure is nice to come in behind the likes of legend Levon Helm.

And I’d like to congratulate all of the nominees for Best AMericana, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, and Rye Cooder.

Ummmm, I was the only one that showed up at the pre-telecast.

But at least I had the chance to speak with CBS at the Grammys!  And get what I thought was a very important message to fellow, struggling musicians.  Yes, I still feel I am in that category.  (If the big bucks start coming in, you will be the first to know!)  But for now, I have to return the gorgeous black diamond earrings that “The Gold Tinker:”, in Deal, NJ, so graciously lent me!  Thank you again!!

This has been a blast!!!  And the press still wants to talk to me.

CNN asked me about Whitney Houston.  First of all, it is very sad.  She is an amazing talent, and I have been a fan.  Really tragic.

I responded by actually saying that I think some of the media and critics should take responsibility for some of the mean things they say.  People are human.  They have feelings.  Of course, they are not responsible for elements of one’s personality.  However we all have the choice when seeing someone on the edge, to talk them down, or push them off.  I believe too many people chose to push.

Jennifer Hudson blew me away last night with her performance of “I Will Always Love You”.  She gave me goosebumps.

But to lift me up, and cause an emotional outburst, Paul McCartney ended the evening, by sheer coincidence, with “And In The End”!

This is the song I chose to end “Emotional Jukebox” with.  So, I lost it.

But guess what?  It ain’t the end!!!  I’m just getting started!

Screw that!  These last two months have gone by like a turtle dragging a piano.

The moment I opened my eyes this morning, the old noggin started racing through a million thoughts.

I am trying to breath.

I have had a blast!  And the blast will continue after today.  Nothing has really changed.  I am still me.  (Although more of a basket case.)

My music is my music.  I am very proud of my album, “Emotional Jukebox”.  And once again, I am humbled by the kindness, support, and enthusiasm that has surrounded this passion project.

Oh shit.  I am starting to cry.  Overwhelming tears of joy, and wonder.  Wondering how I could have gotten so lucky that one man, Dr. Jonathan Schneider, was so kind, that he paid for me to record this album, wanting NOTHING in return.  He believed in me and my music.

There has got to be some kind of reward for this.  (If I win, I will give him the nominee prize….)

I got my Tiffany medallion last night.  It’s gold, kind of like an Olympic Medallion, placed on a light gold satin ribbon.  It was given to me and all of the other nominees.  I almost felt as if I was being crowned.  It was a very special moment for me in my life.

Not that I am anything but honest, but I have a confession to make.

Although I have put up a pretty good front on the bullying, and made jokes about it….(what else can you do?  Shoot yourself?)

What else can you do?  You take it like a woman.  But inside of me, there certainly has been hurt and even anger.

Hurt because I did pay my dues.  I did not game the system, of which I was accused of by those desperate to discredit my nomination, just because I am a nobody, and a nobody that nobody would profit from in certain circles.  Angry because my child was being insulted.

The shear audacity of the writer from the Wall Street Journal saying my album was “Amatuerish”?  It made me shake my head.

I will make clear, that anyone can say my album sucked.  But it will never change the fact that it does not.  It is a great album, with the best players in the world on it.  So anyone who makes a blatant statement like that, pointed at not only me, but the world-class Musicians, many of whom sport Grammy Trophies on their mantals, is just plain ignorant.

I’ve done the Emily Post thing during this entire process, (for the most part)…(I wouldn’t consider myself the poster child for educate), But now, without the facade of a public figure, being this perfect human being that is muzzled to voice the honesty, I have 2 things to say to the naysayers. One is, “Thank you.” And the other is “Fuck you”.    (Thanks, because you have given me tons of press…and the latter, you can figure out for yourselves.)

Okay, now that that is over with, let’s move on to most awesome things!!!!!

I want to thank everyone throughout my career who has believed in me.  Starting with Mom and Dad.  I love you.  You have always been so supportive of my music.  When I wanted to quit my real job when I was 20, to pursue music, you stood by me.  You paid for my demo tapes.  You came to my shows.

Next, my better 3/4′s, Scott Fadynich, who was a fan, and slowly stalked me and eventually kidnapped me to New Jersey, pushing me to keep going with my career.  I had pretty much had it.  Discouraged that I had not yet achieved my goal of recognition on a larger scale.  Signing me up to be a Grammy Member after the album was finished.  Believing in the music so much that he thought it should be submitted for consideration.

Before the nomination, I sometimes got depressed when I went to a big show.  It actually hurt.  I felt that I was good enough to be on that big stage, instead of stuck in a corner of a bar.  I was tired of hearing folks say, “What are you doing playing here? You should be at Madison Square Garden”.

I was tired of hearing folks come up to me during my breaks, when I was playing my albums during the breaks, saying, “Wow, is that Sheryl Crow‘s new album?”

I’m sorry, but it did hurt.

Now back to being happy and grateful…

MY FANS!!!  Thank you guys, for years of support at my shows, and on my albums!!  You get the Super Wicked Awesome Groovy Award!

And all of the radio stations that are playing EMOTIONAL JUKEBOX!!!  Thanks so much!!  Keep it spinning, like my head right now!!!

ANd the writers that took the time to speak with me AND LISTEN TO THE ALBUM!

I’d also like to thank all of the big time producers and engineers that heard my music, and thought enough of it to take the chance and go into the studio.  Tony Prendatt.  Many Grammys under his belt.  He believed in me.  We tried.  We broke the top 40.  Our label ran out of money to continue radio airplay.

What is that you may ask?  It isn’t payola, but, for some reason, in this business, you need a middle-man to get your music heard and potentially played on air.  And that person needs to get paid.  It’s his job.  So that’s all understandable.  But expensive for an Indie musician to support.

(I don’t have time to elaborate on society…why you need a middle man, why you can’t just represent yourself.  Because it is awkward tooting your own horn.  So you pay someone else to do it…to speak the truth of ones’ awesomeness!)

Ken Lewis, an engineer, and now Grammy Winner, heard me, and recorded me for free at Soundtrack’s Studio, in hopes of scoring us a deal. Engineer Steve Sisco, who recorded two of my albums at Soundtrack.

And The Soundtrack Group itself, owners Rob Cavicchio and John Kiehl, treated me like family.  They allowed me to record in their world class studio since I was 28 years old!  They believed in me.  Thanks you for your generosity and love.

And of course all of the brilliant musicians who have played on all of my albums, and Frank Wolf, who engineered Emotional Jukebox, Chornographey, and One Kiss at a Time.  You are a genius.

This is turning into the novel-long acceptance speech stuff, if I had the chance to even say one today…but even if I do, it has to be limited to 30 seconds.  And if I am not close enough to the stage, and jump up in time?  I miss my window.

Just one more thing to make my legs numb at the moment.

And then there is Fred Taylor.  My first manager.  What a wonderful human being.  From Boston.  My claim to fame with Freddy, is that he has seen many acts, before they made it, and predicted they would become famous.  I was one of them.  So, my claim to fame is that I am the only person he thought would have become famous….that did not.  Until Today!

Even if I lose, and I am trying to realistically put my mind in that frame, the nomination alone is success.

I hope it is enough to launch my career.

I recorded tonight with Robert Xeno, a producer I met through Grammy 365, who had a submission in “Americana“, but did not make the final round.  He is AWESOME!  AT THE MOST AWESOME STUDIO IN THIS SOLAR SYSTEM!!!  EASTWEST.  With wife Eloa, a great engineer, by his side, and INCREDIBLE DUMBO EARS Edward Harris Roth – on piano.

I laid down my new song, “When I Sing” in the same studio that the Beach Boys recorded “Pet Sound”, Elvis recorded, and Franky, Joisey Boy Sinatra actually recorded “MY WAY”!!!!

So, I asked the engineer, “How many assholes come into this room and start singing My Way?”

He said, “nobody, really.”  So I said, “I guess I’m gonna be the first, then!”

TADA –  a little improve after my session. I had my studio-high on, as well as being over-tired and punch drunk at 1:00 a.m!

I actually looked a bit like Elmer J. Fudd last night!  And Hubby matched, though his jacket was a bit more elegant.

We blend on the Red Carpet, like "My Cousin Vinney" did!

There were television crews, and microphones all around asking me questions~  I just flashed my “Who the F%^& is Linda Chorney” T-shirt to identify myself.

It was a blast.  Really!  Thanks Grammy Glam, CoverGirl Olay and Venus, at”MyHouse” for having me!

And I met a movie star!!  Bai Ling!   She was gorgeous in person!

I even had VIP parking.  Security looked at me and my plaid, questioning my celeb stat, but I had my papers!  Yeeeeeeehah!  Nominee coming through…

(Now I have the theme song from “The Jefferson’s” in my head.)

I was never much for these big events of who’s who.   But now that I am WTFI Me, folks actually want to converse with moi.  (But I am still not nuts about loud techno music and screaming to have conversations.  What?)

There were glamorous models walking around, and lots of semi-regular people, like me and Scott.  And fancy displays of these museum pieces of art!  Oooh, Ahhh!

I planned on not drinking, until after the Grammys.  But after the Red Carpet first run, which basically happened right after I walked into the party, I had to grab a glass of  bubbly!   (Now I am hearing Carly Simon‘s first line in “You’re so Vain“.)

I looked at Scott, as I stepped on the carpet, and whispered in a panic, “Do I have any snot on my nose?!”

I hadn’t even looked in the mirror before walking in!!

In the afternoon, I had a photo shoot for an upcoming article.  I still don’t have a make-up artist for Sunday.  But fortunately, I went to my girlfriend’s house, the sexy Sammy Phillips, and she is a model, amongst having other talents!  I’ll be on her radio show this week!  So she hooked me up, and did my make-up.

On Monday, while packing up to drive to L.A., on the last bag I was loading into the car, I PULLED MY BACK OUT!!  No!! Not this week!!  Yes, this week.

So, I had to take a pain killer, to endure sitting in the car for 8 hours.  At least the border patrol didn’t bust me, especially when they asked if we were American Citizens.  I said, I’m Americana!  (So, I thought for sure that they would deport me!)

Then I had a wicked awesome massage at Massage Envy.  If you are a massage monger, like I am, that place is affordable, and really great!  I swear, I could get rubbed 24-7.  Going to Thailand is awesome for that! (No, not that.  Real massage, for 5 bucks an hour!)  I love Thailand!!  I highly recommend it.  Delicious food, beautiful, sweet people, culture, and stunning landscapes.  But most of all, FIVE DOLLAR MASSAGES!!!!

I called ahead from Tucson, to San Diego, where we stopped for dinner, and booked it.  (Nice meeting you Igor!)

Regardless of how good it was, I still got no sleep that night.  Still in pain, and hope if my name gets called, that I can actually walk to the stage!  And still rather excited.  Not a good combo for a good night’s sleep.

So, after the photo shoot, I took a power nap, with my make-up on; rolled out of bed at 7:30, and went to this Red Carpet event in my flannel shirt, (It’s cold and rainy in L.A.!  WTF???). jeans, wtfi Linda T shirt, and some cowboy boots.  And I had the same make-up on, untouched!

At least I brushed my hair!  Or should I say hare?  Waskly Wabbit!

P.S.  The folks we are staying with for a few days, I met in Thailand!  On their honeymoon!  A romantic story, of the three of us, that I will share…later.  (Me crashing their honeymoon, not a threesome, so simmer down.)

AHHHH!  P.P.S   I just found these pictures on line this morning!!  Wow!  Look Ma!  I made it to Hollywood!  

And after Forbes posted the shot of us as “Linda Chorney and Guest”, Scott just told me he is going to be like Cher or Madonna, and have only one name…..”Guest”.

Imagine how hyped up you are if you are a Pat’s or Giant’s fan, right now.  Now take that feeling of excitement, if your team wins…

If your team is down by 23 points, and it’s the 2 minute warning, and they somehow pull a win out of their butts!

The Impossible Dream.  That feeling of hope, even though you think you are screwed?

Now take that feeling and multiply it by 100.  (My other amazing nominees are like the Yankees, just another World Series Victory to hang in their stadium.   I’m like the Red Sox before 2004!)

Good Morning.  This is how I feel today!   AHHHHHHH! AHHHHHH!

Packing.  Figuring out what to wear for all of the events this week!

Performing Thursday Night at a cool club called, Genghis Cohen, in Hollywood.  7:00 – 8:00.

Don’t miss seeing me for 10 bucks!  I promise never to charge $300, like half-time acts do.  (Even if I could!)

I am quite sure my value will not soar their.   But you might have to pay 20!

Scott and I are driving from Tucson tomorrow morning, via San Diego.  I’m going to stop along the way, and sing out on a few streets for fun!  For free!  Remember my roots.   I AM TRULY THE 99% OCCUPYING THE GRAMMYS!

And I want to thank the Arizona Daily Star‘s Cathalena E. Burch,  for writing this nice article to see me off of my second home.  (And actually talk about the MUSIC…what actually got me the nomination!)  YEEEEEHAH!
